Michael B. Atkins, M.D.
Michael B. Atkins, M.D. is currently Deputy Director of the
Division of Hematology/Oncology at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical
Center, Director of the Cancer Clinical Trials Office, Director
of the Cutaneous Oncology Program, Director of the Biologic
Therapy Program, Director of Clinical Research at Beth Israel
Deaconess Cancer Center, and leader of the Kidney Cancer Program
at Dana Farber/Harvard Cancer Center (DF/HCC). He is also a
Professor of Medicine at Harvard Medical School. Dr. Atkins’
major research interests include immunotherapy of malignancy,
with specific emphasis on the use of cytokines such as
interleukin 2, interferon and vaccines, treatment of melanoma
and renal cell carcinoma, predictive markers for response to
biologic therapy, and antiangiogenic and targeted therapies. Dr.
Atkins is the Director of the DF/HCC Kidney Cancer Specialized
Programs of Research Excellence (SPORE) grant and Co-principal
Investigator of the DF/HCC Skin Cancer SPORE. Dr. Atkins
currently serves on the following Eastern Cooperative Oncology
Group (ECOG) committees: Developmental Therapeutics Committee,
Melanoma Committee, Genitourinary Committee and Principal
Investigators Committee.
Dr. Atkins received his medical education at Tufts University School of Medicine and postgraduate training at the New England Medical Cancer Center Hospital. Following his training, Dr. Atkins held several academic and hospital appointments at the New England Medical Cancer Center Hospital until 1997. Since 1997, Dr. Atkins has developed and led several programs at the Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center in Boston and the DF/HCC, most notably in cutaneous oncology, renal cancer, and clinical trials.
