Peter J. O’Dwyer, M.D., Chair, Board of Managers
Peter O’Dwyer, M.D. is currently
Professor of Medicine at the University of Pennsylvania School
of Medicine and Director of the Experimental Therapeutics
Program at the University of Pennsylvania Cancer Center. In
addition to his responsibilities at Penn, Dr. O’Dwyer is the
Vice Chair of the Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group (ECOG) and
serves as the Chair of the PrECOG Board of Managers. Dr. O’Dwyer
currently serves on several ECOG committees including the
Gastrointestinal Committee (Co-Chair), Executive Review,
Developmental Therapeutics, and Lab Science & Pathology. He is
Principal Investigator of several grants designed to study the
effectiveness of various treatments for cancer, including
especially the interaction of chemotherapy and antiangiogenic
therapies in colorectal cancer. He is board certified in
Internal Medicine, Pediatrics, and Medical Oncology. Dr. O'Dwyer has more than 250 scientific papers in medical
literature, and participates in numerous national and
international committees.
Dr. O’Dwyer received his medical degree at the University of
Dublin, Trinity College. After internship, he spent a year of
residency at the Hammersmith Hospital in London, followed by
Pediatric and Internal Medicine Residencies in Connecticut and
Maryland. After a fellowship at the Baltimore Cancer Research
Center, he became a Senior Investigator in the Division of
Cancer Treatment at the National Cancer Institute, where he also
received training in biochemical pharmacology in the laboratory
of Dr. Richard Cysyk. At the National Cancer Institute, Dr.
O'Dwyer organized a group to study mechanisms of resistance in
the clinic, and strategies to overcome it. He led the
Developmental Therapeutics Program at Fox Chase Cancer Center,
and since 1999 has been at the Abramson Cancer Center of the
University of Pennsylvania.
